  • Jesus, We're Old

I'm working on a toast to my best friend Karen and reminiscing like mad over the last twenty-two years we've known each other. Has it been that long? Jesus we're old.

  • Goodbye, Dobie Theater

I saw Hands on a Hard Body, The Blair Witch Project, my first short film The Bathroom, my students first short films and so many more movies on your screens. But most importantly, Mark and I walked down the Egyptian Theater aisle to Sunrise and became man and wife. I will miss you Dobie Theater! So long.

  • Tim League, You're Awesome

  • My Teen Angst Stamp
Two weeks before classes start up again at UT. So I've been using my free time wisely cranking out the first draft of Nikki is a Punk Rocker. I'm reliving my adolescence, being in a band, pretending to be a rock star in front of a mirror with my hair brush. All that. I still have a ways to go with the script. It's only a first draft. And like Andrew Stanton says, "Your first draft is shit. And then each draft gets better and better." Hopefully I'm not writing total shit. But regardless I'm having fun.

This is something I would and possibly could make myself if I found the right budget. It's funny because I write a ton of scripts. And some of them I know I'll never be able to make myself. And some of them I don't want to make myself. But this one. I do. It's got my teen angst stamp all over it.

  • Walter Lehman - 2004

Walter Lehman from Kat Candler on Vimeo.

I used to look at short films as "lessons". This short film was my lesson in realism. Trying to make the characters and dialogue feel as real as possible. What I would do in hindsight.-- make it a lot shorter. And tweak the story a little. But even still, I'm proud of what we did. I came up with the story and then brought in Jerry and Scott (my actors and friends) to develop the script through improv.

  • Pilot and Olo - 2003

Pilot and Olo from Kat Candler on Vimeo.

I kind of forgot about this short I made a long, long time ago. I was in a phase of working with two cameras (Canon XL1s, back in the day). I was also and still very much am about making "teen films". I was in a ... less plot, more character phase too. It's nice to look back at these even though I totally cringe here and there. I'm also super anxious to make another film. Painfully anxious to make another film.

  • The Virginity Hit - Trailer

I discovered (but wasn't surprised) that one of our stars of jumping off bridges, Savannah Welch is in this new film The Virginity Hit produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. What?

  • Ramones Obsessed

I'm a little obsessed with The Ramones right now. I can't help it. They're on repeat in my car. I have the Wikipedia tab up on my computer at all times. I've been watching documentaries, concert footage, interviews ...

Yes, I've known the hits for a good long while now. I remember when Adios Amigos was in rotation at the radio station I worked at in college. I remember catching Rock N Roll High School in bits and pieces on TV as a kid. And I remember Jordan Catalano singing I Wanna Be Sedated in a classic episode of My So Called Life. But now that I'm in deep with an outline I've been working on for a few weeks, I've become Ramones obsessed.

They're definitely a part of the script as it is now. We'll see how that continues to play out. But it's like my favorite dried fruit trail mix in the bulk bin at Central Market. I just can't get enough.

  • Wednesday

Toddy and I are working on two huge rewrites. Since she's been away for a few weeks, I've been tackling our teen film. Creating a whole new 20 something page outline. I'm totally loving it and reliving my college days of being in a band. I've also been researching a ton and watching lots of movies like Times Square, Ladies and Gentlemen The Fabulous Stains, The Gits, The Ramones Raw ... I'm hoping to hand it off for notes while I'm back in film camp next week.

And I'm DYING to make a new film. It's been over a year since my last one. I have that crazy crazy itch.

  • Machete - Lindsay Lohan
I love Kurt's latest poster for Machete.

  • The Blue Hearts - Linda Linda

I loved reading the blacklist script Mixtape. It inspired me to get back to work on a script I've been working on that's totally evolved over the last few weeks.
